What are laser pointers?

The distance the light can be seen depends on the output power in milliwatts (mW); the greater the mW, the further the light can be seen in the distance. Low powered laser pointers can can travel anywhere up to 50m, ideal for use indoors such as classrooms and offices, where as high powered ones can be seen miles away, which are for more specialist uses.
How much do they cost?
For low powered ones, they can be as cheap as a couple of pounds whereas the high powered ones can cost a couple of hundred pounds and more. Generally, the higher the mW, the more they cost.
Are they safe to use?
If used properly and carefully, laser pointers are safe. However, laser pointers can be dangerous if not used for their intended purpose. They should never be shone into the eyes of people or animals as it can cause permanent damage to eyesight, potentially leaving them blind.
There have been cases where people have been arrested and others left blind as they have been used inappropriately. So, to ensure everyone is kept safe, always read the instructions that comes with a laser pointer before using it.
